How to Choose the Right Paint Color for Every Room

A simple framework for picking colors you'll still love five years from now.

Choosing a paint color is one of those decisions that feels small in the moment and huge once it's on the wall. The good news: a few simple principles take most of the guesswork out of the process and dramatically increase the odds you'll still love the color years from now.

How to Choose the Right Paint Color for Every Room

Start with light, not paint

Before you even open a fan deck, study the room's natural light. North-facing rooms get cool, indirect light, which makes blues and grays read steely. South-facing rooms drink in warm light all day, which can make warm whites feel almost yellow. East-facing rooms get bright morning light and soft afternoons; west-facing flips that. Match the temperature of the paint to the temperature of the light, not the other way around.

Use the 60/30/10 rule

Designers lean on a simple ratio: 60% dominant color (walls, large furniture), 30% secondary color (rugs, drapery, accent wall), and 10% accent (pillows, art, small decor). When you pick wall paint, you're choosing the 60. That means it should be flexible enough to support whatever you change in the 30 and 10 over the next five years. Soft, low-saturation colors almost always age better in this role than bold ones.

Always test in the real space

Never trust a paint chip in the store. Order or sample at least three candidates, paint two-foot squares directly on the wall, and live with them for 48 hours. Look at them in morning light, afternoon light, and evening light with the lamps on. The color that wins is the one that still looks good in all three. If you're unsure, our color consultation is free with every estimate — we'll bring real samples to your home.
